FILMS Movies
KLEZMER ON FISH STREET
Directed by Yale Strom; in English, Yiddish and Polish, with English subtitles ; produced by Elizabeth Schwartz ; released by Castle Hill Productions. 85 minutes. 2003 - Exclusively at Laemmle's Music Hall, 9036 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, (310) 274-6869.
This film is Strom’s contribution to a rich career blending musical and cinematic achievements. The subject : Americans visiting Poland.
One of the narrative frames is a confrontation in Krakow’s square on a Saturday night between the young Jewish American visitors singing and dancing, and a few Poles who complain because it’s past the time that loud public gatherings are permitted. The nice policemen are stuck - confused and restrained -as the youngsters refuse to disperse.
An intermediary is found in Alta, a Holocaust survivor who is the Klezmaniacs lead singer’s grandmother. Strom follows her own return to Bedzin, whose Fish Street informs the film’s title. Thanks to visitors like Alta and the Klezmaniacs, Klezmer music is heard there once again. Musically speaking, the flame of Judaism has not died in Poland, a country where so much of Jewish culture - including chasidic melodies and Yiddish poetry - was born. We see, for example, a concert of the enthralling Polish klezmer group “Kroke” in the rain : A high-angle shot shows their audience as a vast sea of umbrellas, visually invoking giant yarmulkes (kippas in French).
Strom keeps returning to two images : the silhouette of a man playing a violin in a field, suggesting that Yiddish music is merely a shadow of its pre-Holocaust vitality, and the nighttime Krakow confrontation, where cries of “Stop shooting” take on double resonance. “Why don’t you go back to Israel?” one Polish gentile asks a Polish-Jewish woman who left her native land in 1968 because of government-instigated antisemitism. In addition, interviews, concert footage and Alta’s rueful ruminations make the film jump, in a sense, from Holocaust shadows to the light of present-day celebration.
“Klezmer on Fish Street” is an effective film that - while chronicling and contributing to the return of Jewish life in Poland - questions whether antisemitism has really disappeared there.
Based on Annette Insdorf, director of undergraduate film studies at Columbia University, author of “Indelible Shadows: Film and the Holocaust". January 2004.
A MAN FROM MUNKÁCS Gypsy Klezmer
Directed by Yale Strom – Produced by Duna TV (Hungary) and Starcrest Films(Frankfurt, Germany). 2005 - 58 minutes.
“A Man From Munkács: Gypsy Klezmer explores the symbiotic relationship between the Rom and Jews who lived together before and after World War Two in the Carpathian region. Before the Holocaust there, whenever there was a Jewish celebration (e.g., a wedding, Purim festivities, dance etc.), most of the time the klezmer musicians were not Jews but Rom. In fact, the Rom had played with and for Jews for so many years that some of them spoke a fluent Yiddish. The film examines how this persecuted group (the Rom) saved Jewish folk music until it could be returned to the Jews. We learn about Gyula Galombosi, a Rom virtuoso violinist who traveled throughout the Soviet Union playing classical, Rom, Russian and klezmer music until his death in1986. His hometown was Munkács and in this hometown lived the Jakubowicz family. Ferenc (Feri) Jakubowicz was the first Jewish child born after the Holocaust in Munkács, which was cause for great celebration - Jewish life was being renewed.
During Feri’s birth, Galombosi and his fellow musicians played klezmer music on the street below the apartment. Feri was told this story by his father years later, which caused him to be more curious about klezmer. Feri and Gyula became good friends. Feri, a pianist, learned many great klezmer tunes from Gyula. When Feri and his family immigrated to Budapest in 1979, Feri played music with a local opera company. In the film, Feri shares his initial ambivalence about publicly announcing his Jewishness and his love of klezmer to the gentile world. But in 1990, he formed the first klezmer band in Hungary since the 1920’s, “The Budapest Klezmer Band” and taught the tunes he had learned from Galombosi to the rest of his band, who were not Jewish. On camera, Feri gradually remembers a Munkatsher tune his uncle use to sing to him when he was a young boy. This tune, “The Munkatsher Nign” provides a musical motif throughout the film, as it is interpreted by various Rom and Jewish musicians. Through Feri and Galombosi’s stories, we will trace the rebirth of Jewish music in Hungary today”.

THE LAST KLEZMER : Leopold Kozlowski, his life and music
Directed by Yale Strom - Elisabeth Schwartz Production, 1994. 84 minutes
Summary :
Yale Strom (violin, composer, filmmaker, writer, photographer, playwright) is a pioneer among revivalists in conducting extensive field research in Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans among the Jewish and Rom communities. Strom's documentary film is about the last klezmer to have grown up in the tradition and who is still performing and teaching his art to mostly gentiles in Poland today. Leopold takes a trip back to his hometown of Prezmyslany, Ukraine for the first time since 1945 and shows Yale what life was like for a klezmer before WWII. Along the way we meet a friend of Leopold's and learn how they both survived the war.
DU SHTETL A BROADWAY, une odyssée musicale. Réalisation : Fabienne Rousso-Lenoir- Coproduction : ARTE France, Artline Films, Lobster Films, Thirteen / WNET New York, WETA Washington, D.C.
“Klezmer on Fish Street” is a kaleidoscopic exploration of a new and paradoxical development - the resurgence of Yiddish culture in a country where the Jewish community was decimated. Strom chronicles what he has termed “cultural philo-Semitism” by and for non-Jews.
Klezmer on Fish Street” embraces the new expansiveness of Poland vis-à-vis Judaism. Strom shot much of the film during the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow, where klezmer musicians have large and enthusiastic audiences (with hardly any Jews on either side of the stage). The film raises the question of whether Jewish culture can exist without Jews - or, more precisely, without Jewish faith.

RUMENYE ! RUMENYE !
Director: Radu Gabrea - Production : Total TV Bucharest - - Romanian, English Subtitles - 2006 - 50 min
Summary
Romanian director Radu Gabrea goes to New York to delve into a specific aspect of Klezmer music, namely the Romanian Doina. Without wasting time on unnecessary exposition about the history of Jewish immigrations from Eastern Europe and so on, Gabrea dives right into the issue and spins a thesis that vindicates this lyrical, melancholy and even bluesy strain of Klezmer.
Through interviews with musicians and experts in the field, including Yale Strom and Elisabeth Schwartz, he explores the mutual influences between Romanian, gypsy, and Jewish music in the old country, the similarities between the Romanian Doina (a sort of lament inspired by the songs of Romanian shepherds), as well as the authentic Jewish nature of the Klezmer Doina stemming from the musical modes known from the synagogue and cantorial music. Alongside the enlightening scholarly analysis, live performances bring the music and film to life.
GOLDFADEN'S LEGACY Director: Radu Gabrea - Production: Total TV Bucharest - Editing : Melania Oproiu - Romanian, English subtitles - 2007 - 58 min
Summary :
126 years ago, Avram Goldfaden founded in the north of Romania, at Iasi, the capital of Moldavia (Romania), whose population was over 50% Jewish, the first professional Jewish theatre. At his death in 1980 in New York, some 70 000 New Yorkers participated at the funeral procession, blocking all traffic in Manhattan in order to pay their last respect to the “Shakespeare of the Jewish people” The film describes Goldfaden’s journey from Iasi to New York via Odessa and Sankt Petersburg, and will bring into the present and exceptional personality of the Jewish culture, active throughput the world; it will, at the same time, highlight the short-lived cultural relations between the Romanians and the local Jewish population.
Goldfaden's legacy is a musical romp through the history of Yiddish Theater. From the wine cellars of Rumania to the Broadway stage, this feature documentary is a celebration of the music of Yiddish Theater, its role in the Jewish-American experience and its amazing influence on American popular culture. Our guide on this musical journey will be Zalmen Mlotek, an internationally recognized authority on Yiddish folk and theater music. Raised in a prominently Yiddish-speaking family renowned for their Jewish songbook collections, he has been an innovative force in bringing contemporary Yiddish musical theater pieces to communities worldwide. He is the Artistic Director of the Folksbiene Yiddish Theater (http://www.folksbiene.org/) the oldest venue for Yiddish theater in the world, founded in 1915.

Directed by Joseph Green and Jan Nowina-Przybylski
Summary :
Director Green returned to his native Poland from America to produce this film, the most commercially successful musical in the history of the Yiddish cinema, starring Molly Picon, consummate comedienne of Yiddish theater, vaudeville, and film. This is the classic folk comedy about a man and his daughter who, penniless, decide to become travelling musicians. The daughter disguises herself as a boy to relieve her father's anxiety about unforseeable problems that could befall a young woman "out in the world." They then join together with "another" father-son duo for music, comedy and romance.
Green's original screenplay was enhanced by the folksy lyrics of Yiddish poet Itzik Manger and the memorable musical score of Abraham Ellstein, as well as the talents of Leon Leibold, the romantic lead who later starred in The Dybbuk and Tevye, and Max Bozyk, a character actor par excellence.
Breaking away from the studio-bound cinematography of the early Yiddish talkies, the film was shot on location in the picturesque town of Kazimierz and nearby Warsaw. With shtetl inhabitants as extras, the film captures the vitality and invincible spirit of traditional small town Jewish life.
